Welcome to the Illawarra Lutheran Church on line.

The Illawarra Lutheran Church is a multi-campus ministry comprising St Johns Lutheran Church, Wollongong, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Oak Flats and Joy Fellowship, Nowra. As a part of the Lutheran Church of Australia we are here to serve all people of the Illawarra and South Coast region, not just Lutherans, as we seek to live and proclaim the good news of Jesus who has come to give all people fullness of life and hope through his life, death and resurrection.

On this site you will be able to get information about our worship times and places in the Illawarra as well as information about other ministries and groups that go to make up who we are as the Lutheran church here.  You will find resources for your family worship and devotions in 'Taking Faith Home' which is updated weekly along with Bible readings and Prayer points for personal devotions.  There are also photo albums from some of our church camps and worship.  A link is provided to 'The Southern Cross Reformer', our blog spot.

Please come in and make yourself at home.  If you have any ideas or suggestions as to how we can improve this site or provide you with information that you want or need, please feel free to contact us.

Faith Talk: Discuss in your household or small group:
Have you given up something to follow Jesus? Share your story.
What did Simon, Andrew, James and John give up to follow Jesus? How do you think they felt?
What does it mean to be a “fisher of people”?

Devotional Practices: In your home devotional times this week, pray for people who do not know Jesus. Make a list of names (perhaps in the shape of a fish!) and pray for each of the people in turn. Reproduce the list for each household member to carry with them during the week.

Service: St. Francis of Assisi is credited as having said “Preach the gospel always; if necessary, use words.” Our acts of loving service to others are part of what it means to “fish for people”. Is there a non-Christian in your circle of relationships whom you could serve in some way this week? Discuss together and plan an act of service e.g. invite them into your home for a meal (you could serve a fish dish!); offer to help with child-minding; surprise them with a gift of baked goods.

Rituals and Traditions: For many centuries the “fish” has been an important Christian symbol. In times of the early church, it was dangerous to be known as a Christian in some parts of the Roman Empire; so believers developed a “code language” to reveal their faith to others who were Christian. A Christian would draw on the ground the upper half of a fish symbol. If the other persons was a Christian they would recognize this and add a second curved line to complete the drawing of a fish.
Place the fish symbol in different parts of your home to symbolize your faith in Jesus.

Jesus does not call us to be disciples because of who or what we are, but because of who he can make us if we are prepared to follow him. Mark 1:14-20.

Prayers this week

for those who spread the gospel - that they would receive encouragement from God

that all those who hear God's word would repent and believe

that those who are afraid of God's anger would find his mercy in Jesus

that those trapped in cycles of addiction or violence or crime might know the freedom that repentance brings

for those near death, whose appointed time has grown short.

Concluding prayer

Lord, you have called us to follow your Son in repentance and trust. By your Holy Spirit strengthen us when we are weary, fill us with hope when we despair, and give us your light when we walk in darkness, for you alone are our rock and salvation. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
